Whether you are following me on social media or are a current client or are just taking a peek on my website: Welcome. It’s a wonderful word, isn’t it?
I’m an American who relocated to Ireland, the “land of a hundred thousand welcomes” or “Céad míle fáilte”. I also distinctly remember my first visit to Nigeria. Every new person I was introduced to would shake my hand and proudly say, “You are welcome.”
I truly felt like I was. I hope you do too.
The English word “welcome” traces its roots back to the Old English wilcuma, composed of wil, meaning “desire” or “pleasure”and cuma, meaning “guest” or “newcomer.” I see the word, “welcome” embodying a heartfelt invitation, expressing joy and hospitality towards others.
In Italian, where I had the privilege of living for more than three years, “benvenuto” conveys a warm embrace, while in Spanish, which is the language of my fore-fathers, “bienvenido” seems to exude hospitality and acceptance.
In Japanese, where I still have yet to travel – the term “yōkoso” symbolizes openness and inclusion. No matter where you go or where you are from, there’s a universal human need for acceptance and belonging. But a true welcome extends beyond mere words.
It must encompass actions that demonstrate genuine care and support. It involves listening attentively, offering assistance, and actively fostering belonging.
That’s what I’m all about and I hope you are too. Here in Communi-G, and through my company, The Language of Leadership, Ltd., I am committed empowering people to become purposeful and purpose-filled communicators, equipped with confidence and comfort.
